Independent Expenditures: September 19

We’re back! CBMG has been MIA because of some data issues with the FEC Independent Expenditure portal. It has been difficult to verify expenditures, causing a mini-hiatus from our daily posts. Don’t worry, it’s over now.

Wednesday was a slow day for outside political spending, despite the presence of some major GOP (Crossroads) and Dem (SEIU) spenders.  Presidential spending dominated. Groups disclosed nearly $1 million on the race for the White House, accounting for 59% of the daily total.

Quick hits for September 19th-

The Roundup: 7 groups disclosed over $1.6 million in outside political spending targeting 10 federal elections

The Big Spender: Crossroads GPS dropped $893K on TV ads opposing three democrat candidates for office - Barack Obama, Shelley Berkley (Senate, NV) and Tammy Baldwin (Senate, WI). Crossroads GPS is one of the two dark money organizations conceived by GOP super-operative, Karl Rove. We’ve provided an overview of their spending history in previous posts. GPS’ disclosure volumes have increased over the past few weeks with the 501(c)(4)  organization spending $7.8 million last week.  The current President of GPS, Steven Law, served as Deputy Secretary of Labor for US President George W. Bush.

House or Senate? The Senate. Groups disclosed nearly $628K targeting Senate contests and only $47K on House races. Senate elections in Florida, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia continue to receive the lion’s share of attention.

The Hotspot: National spending on the Presidential contest aside, the Senate race in the Sunshine Sate gobbled up more cash ($204K) than any other election on Wednesday between Bill Nelson (D) and Connie Mack (R). Ohio is runner up with $170K disclosed on the Senate race between Sherrod Brown (D) and Josh Mandel (R) and the House election between, former Mayor of Dayton, Mike Turner (D) and Sharen Neuhardt (D).

The High Striker: Republicans. Republican groups disclosed $1.4 million compared to just $237K for the Democrats. For every $1 spent by the Dems on Wednesday, Reps shelled out $6.
